Nutella Banana Bread with a Cream Cheese Swirl

Slowly but surely, I’ve started to make some friends at my new job.

While I would love to credit my charm and wit for this, I highly suspect it has something to do with the fact that I baked three loaves of this bread in an effort to bribe people to like me.

So really, I can’t be sure who falls under the category of “friend” versus “random hungry person.” But for now, let’s just go ahead and make the sweeping assumption that we have all been united in a chocolate-banana-bread-loving kind of friendship. I hear that kind runs deep.

But whether you’re using it as bribery (like I did) or just sitting on the couch eating it in large quantities (like I totally would have if I had more friends), this bread is pretty fucking great. It’s like a brownie, if a brownie also tasted like banana bread. The cream cheese is already in it, too, which made deciding on a topping more difficult.

That is, until I looked at the mess of ingredients on my counter and asked myself:

Say, Laura – would you like some Nutella on your Nutella bread?

Why – yes. Yes, in fact, I would.

Yep. That was a good decision.

On a complete tangent – if you want to be notified of the happy hour I am having in NYC soon and did not receive an email from me today, it means you entered your email address wrong (or you just didn’t sign up yet). Fear not – you can enter your email correctly (or at all) nowLet’s be friends!

    For the bread

    • ½ c butter, room temperature
    • 3/4 c sugar
    • 2 eggs, room temperature
    • 1 tsp vanilla
    • 2 c flour, sifted
    • 1 tsp baking soda
    • ½ tsp salt
    • 1 c mashed banana
    • ½ c sour cream
    • ½ c Nutella
    • 1 1/2 c chocolate chips

    For the cream cheese swirl

    • 6 oz cream cheese, room temperature
    • 1 egg

Preheat oven to 350. Butter and flour loaf pan. Cream butter and sugar in a stand mixer (or using a hand mixer). Add in eggs, one at a time, mixing thoroughly. Add vanilla, mix. Add in Nutella, mix. Mix in banana and sour cream. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, salt.  Add to wet ingredients, and combine until just barely mixed. Stir in chocolate chips.

Prepare the cream cheese swirl by beating together cream cheese and egg.

Fill loaf pan with half the batter. Spoon cream cheese swirl on top, stirring slightly with a spoon. Layer with other half of batter on top. Bake for about an hour and 10 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Baked goods are absolutely a way to bond with coworkers — and make them completely dependent upon you and your awesome food! I’m known as the cupcake queen ’round these parts, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t occasionally use that to my advantage . . .

You are too funny. You remind me of me 40 years ago when I was a 29 year old x wife, lol. I collect banana bread recipes and this is one I didn’t have. Sounds amazing. I made one up that’s a local fave. It’s double chocolate cream cheese banana bread. I’ve never tried Nutella before. Maybe I should. I know the grand kids would love it.
