This weekend, Austin was transformed. Downtown streets replaced with tourist rallies. Hipsters and yuppies outnumbered by international billionaires. Dive bars throwing parties with a $300 cover to watch sexual trapeze artists perform. All in the name of the world’s most elite form of car racing – Formula One.

As much as I would have loved to stay in town and attend the race (or at the very least the erotic trapeze show), I decided to bail and head to a friend’s lake house.

Really though, I shouldn’t be scolded for missing it – I’ve already watched enough Formula One races for a lifetime. My ex-husband was totally obsessed, and I was loving and supportive enough to try to get into it for five years of race-watching hell. Well… mostly I just made pancakes while he stared at the screen like an idiot. That still counts, right?

Anyway, the lake house was laid back, relaxed, and all-around delightful. And so was this mid-fall layering combo that I wore out there.

The gray sweater from Aritzia has been a favorite of mine for a while now. I bought it because it felt like a gym shirt (and who doesn’t want to pass off an extra soft gym shirt as a real shirt, am I right?). It was only recently, though, that I discovered what a perfect element of relaxation it can add to a layered look.

This statement necklace is always my go-to for long trips, adding just the right pop of unexpected to any outfit. If you don’t have a great colorful necklace in your closet, it’s time to reconsider. Such an easy way to look much more put together than you actually are. I mean… I take that back. I’m always totally put together. Definitely. Yeah.

Oh, and if you can’t tell by the way I’m swinging them jauntily in the air – these booties are new. I’m really excited about them. I sincerely hope they stay as comfy as they feel right now, because I can already tell I’ll be wearing them more than the recommended amount.

More to come on the lake house festivities soon. But for now, happy layering!

oh em gee. mommy and daughter match. kinzie agrees that gray + pink is a delightful color combo.

So cute! I really like the shirt combo. Need to upgrade some of my polos and this is a good excuse. Time to online shop.

Cutie! I don’t blame you for getting away. I would have too. Love the look, especially your aviators. I am obsessed with my aviators and am convinced they make me look like a badass. My husband thinks I’m ridiculous. But they make you look like a badass, so I feel validated.
